Voters in the the 1st Congressional District face an important choice in the Sept. 1 Democratic primary election between incumbent U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield, and Mayor Alex Morse, of Holyoke.

Both candidates are scheduled to meet in a televised debate at the studios of New England Public Media on Channel 57 and 88.5 FM on Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. The debate has been organized by a consortium of media organizations, including The Berkshire Eagle, New England Public Media and The Republican and MassLive. The debate will also be streamed at berkshireeagle.com.

To make this forum as relevant and meaningful as possible, we are asking residents of the district to offer their questions to the candidates on issues impacting their lives and the future of their communities. Pertinent questions will be included into the format as time permits.

The debate will be moderated by veteran newscaster Ray Hershel and feature questions by a panel from The Eagle and The Republican/MassLive. As there will be no studio public participation due to social-distancing guidelines, we won't be able to take audience questions, so it is important that we gather input from the community ahead of the event. We are hoping you will contribute your voice to this important debate.

Questions may be addressed to either one or both of the candidates. To submit a question, send an email to letters@berkshireeagle.com by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

We look forward to hearing from you.
