WMass Football: Wahconah, Hoosac are top seeds as four county teams make the tourney

For four Berkshire County football teams, the long road to Gillette Stadium will begin Friday.

Wahconah, Hoosac Valley, Lee and Mount Greylock earned their way into the MIAA Western Massachusetts football tournament. The Berkshire quartet are three victories away from playing for a state championship at the home of the New England Patriots.

Wahconah and Hoosac earned top seeds in their respective divisions.

In Division VII, what is basically last year's Division IV, Wahconah earned the top seed, followed by Frontier, South Hadley and Palmer. Coincidentally, those are the same four teams that were in last year's D-IV field, but except for Wahconah, were all in different seeds.

With the top seed, Wahconah will host Palmer in a semifinal game Friday at 7 p.m., in Dalton. The other game features South Hadley at Frontier.

Hoosac Valley is the only undefeated team in Western Massachusetts, and has earned the No. 1 seed in Division VIII. The Hurricanes will face fourth-seeded Mount Greylock. The game is tentatively scheduled for Friday at Renfrew Field in Adams at 7 p.m.

The other game has second-seeded Lee hosting No. 3 Ware on Friday night at John J. Consolati Field.

Western Massachusetts' Division III had to dig deep to find its four participants. Central, Holyoke and Minnechaug were the only D-III teams with .500 or better records. So after extrapolating the Walker Statistical Instrument out to include all D-III teams, Chicopee Comp edged out Agawam to be the fourth seed.
