Barrington Stage premiering Kaufman-Ferber musical 'The Royal Family' next summer

PITTSFIELD — Barrington Stage Company will open its 2018 season in June with the world premiere of "The Royal Family of Broadway," a new musical comedy based on George S. Kaufman & Edna Ferber's "The Royal Family," by the Tony Award winning creators of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."

In August, Barrington Stage also will present "West Side Story," in honor of Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbin's 100th birthdays. This will be the second go-round for "West Side Story" at Barrington Stage. BSC artistic director Julianne Boyd, who will be directing this production, first directed the "Romeo and Juliet"-inspired musical during BSC's 2007 season.

The remainder of the season is expected to be announced in January or February.

Set in the 1920s and loosely based on the legendary Barrymore family, "The Royal Family of Broadway" centers on three generations of actors — an aging imperious grande dame, a Broadway star looking for love, a self-centered boozing leading man who has fled to Hollywood, and a promising ing nue — each having to make pivotal choices in their lives.

With a book by Tony Award winner Rachel Sheinkin ( "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"), music and lyrics by Tony Award winner William Finn ( "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," "Falsettos"), choreography by Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Joshua Bergasse ("On the Town," "So You Think You Can Dance") and direction by Tony Award winner John Rando ( "On the Town," "Urinetown"), "The Royal Family of Broadway" will begin previews on June 7 on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage. Opening is set for June 13. The show will run through June 30.

"West Side Story," which transports Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" to the streets of New York where its two lovers are caught in the midst of a bitter fight between rival white and Hispanic gangs, will feature choreography by dancer, choreographer and Tony nominee, Robert La Fosse.

Previews begin July 27 on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage. Opening is set for Aug. 1. The show will run through Aug. 26.

Season passes are now on sale. Single tickets for "The Royal Family of Broadway" and "West Side Story" will be available in March.
