Viareggio Carnival

Seen here is one of the big floats in the opening procession of the Carnival at Viareggio, on the northern coast of Italy, Feb. 21, 1960. The idea expressed in this float in caricature is a new universal deluge only the animals will be saved, while all mankind, with its nuclear science, its politics will be swallowed up. The float is the work of Italian sculptor Raffaello Francesconi. (AP Photo/Jim Pringle)
