The Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria keels far over before sinking 225 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, 45 miles off Nantucket Island, on July 26, 1956. The ship was struck broadside by the Swedish-American liner Stockholm in heavy fog a day earlier. At least 51 people died, from both vessels.
